Haji Mohamad Sheriff Bin Awang Osman

He was the first commoner to hold such a high post in the Kedah State government, a post usually held by the aristocrats. He was born on 5 August, 1890 in Seberang Sungai Raja, Alor Setar. He had his early education up to Standard 7 at the Penang Free School, an English medium school.

Career:

  • Interpreter, British Advisor's Office, Alor Setar (1907)
  • Assistant Secretary, Kedah State Council (1910)
  • Head, Land Works (1912)
  • Assistant Secretary of State (1915)
  • Secretary of State (1931 - 1948)
  • The First Menteri Besar of Kedah (1948 - 1954)

In appreciation his contributions as the Menteri Besar, he was awarded several honorary medals and titles. One of them was the 'Award of Kedah Long Service Medal'. It was awarded by HRH, the Sultan of Kedah, the late Sultan Abdul Hamid. Other awards include the C.B.E and C.M.G from the King of England and the 'Kedah Order of Merit' (K.O.M), bestowed by HRH The late Sultan Badlishah.

He died on the 27 September, 1962 at the age of 72 and was laid to rest at the Muslim Cemetery in Akar Peluru, Alor Setar
